A Q&A with Mark Goodman

TEC: What’s something you pack for The 80s Cruise that no one would expect?

MG: My curly wig so I can dress up as ‘Mark Goodman from the 80s’ for icon night!

TEC: Which 80s artist interview in your career left you completely starstruck, and how did you keep your cool?

MG: Paul McCartney for sure. I’m not sure I kept my cool, even though Paul did everything to make me comfortable, including making a dinner reservation for me and my wife!

TEC: What’s one on-air moment from your MTV days that almost didn’t happen—or nearly went off the rails?

MG: I was MCing at the US Festival in 1983. It was the first time MTV did anything live remote during our regular programming. I was bringing Ozzy Osbourne on stage, and it had to be timed just right to hit the satellite and be live on MTV from the stage. I go out on stage and whip the crowd of four hundred thousand people into a frenzy …and I say…”and now Ozzy Osbourne.” I look off to the stage manager again, and he says “…nope. You were early. We have to do the whole intro again in front of the live metal audience!”

TEC: If we let you create one brand-new theme night for the cruise, what’s it called, and what’s the dress code?

MG: Let’s Get Physical night-dress code….spandex (See what Alan has to say about that!)…colorful thick scrunchy sox….cut off sleaveless workout t-shirt…short shorts..tank tops.
